Rule of law

The Mission supports the development of an independent and robust justice system that upholds human rights.

The Mission supports the development of an independent justice system that upholds human rights and possesses the capacity and commitment to effectively investigate, prosecute and adjudicate serious crimes, including war crimes, hate crimes, trafficking in human beings, terrorism-related offences, corruption, organized crime and domestic violence.

Democratic governance

Strengthening civic participation and fostering social cohesion

The Mission works with institutions and communities at all levels to promote democratic governance, strengthen civic participation, prevent corruption and foster social cohesion and inclusive dialogue.

Human rights

Inclusion, equality and access to social services

The Mission aims to promote an understanding of and respect for human rights. It works with an extensive network of counterparts, including public officials at all levels of government in Bosnia and Herzegovina, on a range of human rights topics relevant to BiH’s international human rights commitments. Activities focus on promoting fundamental freedoms, including freedom of assembly, media, and religion or belief, as well as the right to non-discrimination, economic and social rights, and the rights of Roma and other minorities, as well as persons and groups in situations of vulnerability.

Education

Supporting quality education for all

The Mission fosters inclusive quality education by improving curricula, learning and teaching materials and teacher competencies.

Security co-operation

Building trust, confidence and security

The Mission works to build trust among security and defence actors in Bosnia and Herzegovina and supports the development of stronger strategic, legislative and regulatory frameworks in the country. It promotes measures to build confidence and security in the country, and assists with compliance and reporting on OSCE politico-military commitments in the country.

Environmental protection

Building trust through collective environmental action

The Mission addresses Bosnia and Herzegovina’s urgent challenges and builds trust through collective action, promoting good environmental governance, rights and justice by strengthening the advocacy work and capacity of government, civil society and justice partners.

Elections

The Mission’s initial focus on conducting elections originated with the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement, before being transferred to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Central Election Commission in 2002. The Mission continues to work on broader election-related initiatives today.

Gender

In order to combat gender inequality, the Mission actively integrates a gender perspective into all aspects of its political and programmatic work, concentrating on promoting women’s political participation and eradicating gender-based violence.

Youth

The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina places great significance on working for youth and with youth, recognizing young as key partners for positive change, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
