OSCE and UN in BiH: Open display of symbols and glorification associated with ideologies of hatred, violence, and mass atrocities contradicts democratic values

SARAJEVO, 17 February 2026 - The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina (Mission) and United Nations in BiH express concern over recorded footage from Široki Brijeg over the weekend, in which the Ustasa era slogan “Za dom spremni” was chanted by crowds and individuals and where paraphernalia reflecting the slogan and imagery of a convicted war criminal were on display. 

This open display of symbols and glorification associated with ideologies of hatred, violence, and mass atrocities contradicts democratic values, human rights and the principles of mutual respect, dignity and empathy toward victims of the Ustasa regime. It risks normalizing extremism; it intimidates select communities; and it exacerbates fear among all citizens who wish to live in a secure and stable environment. 

We call on the relevant authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to address this and all other similar incidents and activities across the country, promptly, thoroughly, and in line with domestic legislation and international commitments. 

At the same time, we underscore the importance of sustained efforts in education, prevention, and youth engagement to counter extremism and foster a culture of critical thinking, historical awareness based on facts, and respect for the country’s strength in diversity.
